Tom Stephenson, LNHA

Tom heads our Champaign team. A seasoned leader, he has almost 40 years of experience in long-term care. He began his career in 1975 at the Tuscola Health Care Center in Tuscola, Ill., where he worked for almost 39 years. He started as a cook, and worked his way up to assistant administrator before being named administrator in 1978. Tom joined Helia Healthcare of Champaign in March 2014.

Tom is highly committed to his job as a long-term care administrator. “I like the daily challenges of operating a facility to ensure proper care for our residents,” he says.

Active in community service, Tom has served as president and as a board member of the Tuscola Community School District’s Board of Education. He was also a longtime member of the Douglas Credit Union’s board of directors.

Tom enjoys golfing, biking, gardening and spending time with his family — “especially with my granddaughter, Kara,” he says.

Rosanna Fabi, BSN, RN

Post-Acute Advisor

Rosanna helps patients make the transition from area hospitals and local assisted living communities to our rehabilitation programs. Here, individuals receive the customized care they need to fully recover and return home.

She has more than 30 years of experience in the nursing field, including 18 years of hospital bedside care and 10 years of working with physically and mentally challenged individuals. Rosanna holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines.

“We strive for excellence in healthcare, and provide a top-quality experience for you and your family – always with the goal of bringing you home,” says Rosanna, who has been a member of the Helia Healthcare team since 2012. She worked as our director of nursing before moving into her current position.

Along with helping people on their road to recovery, Rosanna enjoys singing and cooking. “I love to prepare and eat traditional Filipino dishes,” Rosanna says. “And I’m now mastering chili for my son.”

Sandra Kinney, BSN, RN

Director of Nursing

Sandra Kinney, BSN, RN Director of Nursing, Helia Healthcare of Champaign

Sandra oversees the care of all of our patients and residents at Helia Healthcare of Champaign. She has extensive nursing experience, having worked in both long-term care and hospital settings for more than 28 years. Sandra began her career as a CNA (certified nursing assistant), and has continued her advancement with ongoing education — moving from LPN to ASN to RN. In 2013, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Eastern Illinois University.

“I have a passion for working with the elderly,” says Sandra, who joined the Helia Healthcare team in 2014. Consequently, she has held various nursing positions in skilled care facilities, ranging from floor nurse all the way up to director of nursing.

“The elderly population is one I have always felt deserves the best care possible,” Sandra says. “They need a voice, an advocate, someone who truly cares about their care and well-being. It is very satisfying to know that I’m doing whatever I can to ensure this happens.”

Sandra is a member of the Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders and is also the president and a founding member of the Black Nurses Association of Central Illinois.

When she’s not focused on nursing, Sandra has a myriad of hobbies and interests.

“I love FaceTiming with my new granddaughter, watching our sons play basketball, and riding my scooter with my husband,” she says. “I love listening to all music — but gospel is my favorite.

“I love the outdoors, and recently — as a result of our Cleanup Day here at Helia — I’ve added planting and gardening to my list of hobbies!”

Kim Kersey

Director of Social Services

Kim helps our residents and their families adjust from a home or hospital environment to a long-term care setting. Her training includes psychoeducational assessment, life skills and anger management.

Kim helps our residents and their families adjust from a home or hospital environment to a long-term care setting. She has extensive training in several areas that relate to her social services work, including psychoeducational assessment, life skills and anger management. Kim is also a certified first responder.

At Helia Healthcare of Champaign, Kim finds great satisfaction in her work. “I care deeply about the people I serve,” Kim says. “When I can make them feel respected and well cared for, it‘s incredibly gratifying.”

Kim has many interests, including motorcycling, jewelry making and camping. But her family is her greatest joy, she says.

“It’s family first. I have a thriving 35-year marriage, six children and five grandchildren. Life is good!”

Michael J. Todd

Culinary Manager

Michael heads our kitchen at Helia Healthcare of Champaign, cooking up delicious and nutritious meals for our residents and guests. He has more than 26 years of experience in the food service world.

Michael heads our kitchen at Helia Healthcare of Champaign, cooking up delicious and nutritious meals for our residents and guests. He has more than 26 years of experience in the food service world, and has worked in a wide variety of settings — “from Wendy’s to the University of Illinois Dining Services,” he says.

“I very much enjoy working with our great staff and interacting with our wonderful residents,” says Michael of his position as culinary manager.

When he’s not whipping up meals in our kitchen, Michael likes “playing softball, being outdoors and spending time with the family.”
